Yes.. most black 8 elements are actually black chrome instead of black paint. The later yellow scale version usually are full black paint.
There's approx. 4-6 major variations in black 8 elements... roughly, they are:
Very early one with brass mount and also a black paint (brassing) lower part (the part closest to the mount). This is the most valuable version mostly with red scale. Focusing tab will be black paint and brassing too.
Later version with black base but no brass mount, focusing tab remain black paint and will brassing.
At around serial 19XXXXX, a batch will have black paint top part too (The parts closest to filter). But it is black paint but not brass under but show silver colour instead.
Then this one Ming is selling is later yellow scale version in which black parts are black chrome. Mount, base and focusing tab are all silver colour.
For M3 version with have a lot more variations... because the goggle part have black base, silver base, black paint finder frame, silver, black chrome, brass believe black, silver believe black etc. All subject to which batch they are in.
8 Elements alone have a lot of studies and variations. Even silver one early Canada and late Germany picture will look a little different. When you try to weight different 8 elements often the weight is different too meaning the lens elements will also have slight variations according to batches.
Then differen serial number batch also have different collectible values, some off serial number one are produced specially for millitary.
When there chance let's try to list out all 8 elements variations one by one and if we can find samples of them we can arrange a gathering and discuss discuss!!
So much fun collecting Leica! |
