When I was young, I spent days and days listening to the complete works of Mahler, sometimes with scores in hands, sometimes not.
I was completely blown away by the late-romanticism of Mahler. Each of his symphony was like a long romantic novel depicting a complete world view. As a young man, I worshiped Mahler as a hero. The emotions of his music opened up new frontiers in my heart of which I had been hitherto unaware.
As I grew older and lived longer in Hong Kong, the daily grinds of life took its toll. The countless selfish and short-sighted gestures of people I encounter every day made me less idealistic, more practical, and certainly less enamored of grandiose gestures. But still, a Mahler symphony makes a great evening out even now. |
