According to my humble understanding, skintone is not a fixed art but varies according to ambient lighting. Moreover, it is open to personal interpretation, subject to (good) taste. For instance, the skintone of Degas's ballarinas is nothing like that in Goya's portraits. Personal style is key.
From what I have seen, all successful skintone produced by CMOS requires artifical lighting, even under sunlight. The simplest setup includes off-camera flash(es). Some setups are incredibly complex. Since I haven't got a clue about flash, sticking to CCD is easier for me. CCD also benefits from artificial lighting, but perhaps for a slightly different reason: ISO not high enough.
In complex ambient lighting situations, artificial lighting helps control skintone and reduce uncertainties.
