I saw this link in LFC very late last night.
I read through the whole article, as well as the numer ...
hehe. i took some time to read the article.
my situation is a bit different from k-san. first of all, i don't own the camera. my friend has it. i tried it. i haven't decided to buy it or not.
2ndly, i only own half of the brands k-san owns i don't know if it would give me a more biased or unbiased viewpoint.
back to the article. it seems to me that it was written by someone who has never owned a digital medium format before. so his question is really 135 vs med format.
but before we go further to our discussion. it is very important to point out one fact - smaller format sensors ALWAYS come with more advanced technology than larger format sensor. the reasons are in twofold: 1) easier to make. 2) larger market.
that's why it is correct to say that the sensor on Sony A7R2 is more high-tech than the one on GFX. A7R2 sensor has BSI, phase detection, etc. but at the same time, cellphone camera sensors even have more advanced technology, like those patented curve sensor, etc. so if one uses med format digital, they know that they won't get the "latest" technology per pixel. but that doesn't mean that they won't get the best quality.
besides, the A7R2 sensor is still Sony's secret weapon. it is not available to any third party. in fact, it is not even listed on the sony sensor company's webpage. if we compare a widely use high resolution sensor, the Sony 36mp one. I think the one on GFX at least have the league of technology, if not better.
for noise, just look at the article's chart comparison and turn it to ISO1600 and 3200. then one can see the difference. it is rather meaningless to compare it at ISO12800. No one would use 12800 anyway.
for dynamic range, that is tricky. First thing, i think Pentax 645Z is definitely better than Nikon D800E for DR. I own both cameras. But for GFX, one thing i noticed is the problem of highlight clipping. and it is not rescuable (see my samples posted). it is very important not to overexpose. for shadow areas, tons of room to recover.
for resolution, Canon 50mp is really not up to the league. So i think the only comparable sensor is Sony 42mp. The 42mp is an excellent sensor. Is the difference between 42mp vs 50mp really big? No.
but using medium format is really about subtle differences and the handling. the medium format look (perspective) is quite different. and in fact, even "the look" of using a medium format is very different too.
what do u feel when u see people using a Canon vs people using a Hasselblad? it is not just about being snobbish. but about the seriousness of the process of image-taking. the slower process. the weight and bulkiness. the rich details in the files. i think that marks a very big difference between 135 format and med format.
just like people still shoot films. i still insist using CCD sensor if possible. we cannot be too utilitarian to count the effectiveness of every pixel each time ;)
