Buying Used Retro Consoles in Hong Kong: Carousell Verification and Region Pitfalls

Inspect and verify used retro consoles bought on Carousell or in Hong Kong markets, with region, power, and connector checks.

Your Super Famicom from Carousell just arrived. The seller's photo showed a clean unit that powers on. You plug it into your 4K OLED with a cheap converter. The image smears into a juddery mess and the sound buzzes. Buying second-hand retro hardware in Hong Kong demands a workflow that treats every listing as a trap until you verify it in person. Two things kill a deal: region and power. A third is condition that only a test suite can reveal. This is your pre-purchase inspection checklist. It covers what to check on the listing, what to do when you meet the seller in Sham Shui Po, and which hardware claims you can verify on the spot versus which you must never trust.

Inspect The Listing Photos First

Before you message a seller, run a Carousell inspection checklist against the photos. Blurry shots of the rear panel are a red flag. The region tells you about power and video standards. A Japanese unit has a 100V label and a square, two-blade plug that will not fit a Hong Kong wall socket without an adapter. A PAL unit from Europe has a round-pinned plug and says 220-240V. The moment you are face to face, the second step begins: the physical region check. Open the cartridge slot and look at the region lockout pins. A Super Famicom's NTSC-J cartridge slot has a different shape than the PAL unit's. A PAL game cartridge will not fit. A US SNES game will not fit either. Power on the machine with a Japanese 100V power supply only if you brought a 220V step-down transformer. Third, the text on the test suite's menu should be sharp, not smeared. Sharp text confirms the machine outputs 240p properly and the signal is not being mangled into 480i by a bad cable or a faulty video encoder.

Check The JP-21 Connector

The connector on the back is where most Hong Kong deals fall apart. A Japanese unit, including the Super Famicom and the Sega Saturn, uses the JP-21 video connector. It is a 21-pin socket that looks identical to the European SCART connector but has a completely different pinout. Plugging a European RGB SCART cable into a JP-21 socket will not produce an image. At worst, it will short the video output and permanently damage the encoder chip. The RGB SCART pinout is standardised for Europe, where pin 16 carries the blanking signal that switches the TV into RGB mode. JP-21 uses pin 16 for a different signal. The two are not interchangeable. On a used unit, inspect the JP-21 socket for bent pins, corroded contacts, or a cracked shell. A bent pin is a repair that costs more than the hardware. The Sega Saturn JP-21 output is the same story. A European SCART cable will not work. You need a JP-21 to SCART adapter wired correctly for the Japanese pinout, or you will get no image at all.

Bring Your Own Step-Down Transformer

Power is the second non-negotiable check, after region. Hong Kong mains voltage is 220V at 50Hz. A Japanese unit expects 100V at 50/60Hz. The 220V step-down transformer is not optional. It is not a power strip with a travel adapter. A travel adapter only changes the plug shape, not the voltage. Plugging a 100V machine into a 220V socket through one will destroy the power supply. You need a transformer rated for at least the unit's wattage. A Super Famicom draws about 12W. A Sega Saturn draws about 15W. A PlayStation 2 draws about 40W. Buy the transformer in Hong Kong, not from a seller in Japan. The local unit will be wired for 220V input and 100V output. When you meet the seller, bring your own transformer, not the seller's. You need to test that the hardware works with your power setup, not one the seller has rigged to run on 220V by bypassing the internal supply. That modification is a known fire hazard.

Inspect For Corrosion And Capacitor Leaks

While the machine is running, open the controller ports and inspect them. Controller port corrosion is a common fault on hardware that has spent decades in humid Hong Kong apartments. A black border means walk away, unless you specifically collect PAL games. That is a niche within a niche.

Find Trusted Sellers At Meetups

If a seller refuses to let you test the hardware, do not buy it. The failure case is Sham Shui Po on a Sunday. The only Super Famicom in the Golden Computer Centre has a 'tested working' sticker. The seller refuses to plug it in because 'the TV is busy.' That is a lie. Every shop has a test bench. Go to the Hong Kong Retro Game Association meetup instead. The group organizes events at the RETRO.HK convention at D2 Place ONE in Lai Chi Kok every December, and at smaller swap meets through the year. At these meetups, members bring their own hardware for sale. They will plug one in because they are enthusiasts, not flippers. The association's meetups are also where you can verify a seller's claims about a motherboard revision, region lockout, or output quality. Another collector will have the same model and can compare. This is the only reliable way to buy a pre-modded unit. A modded machine with a region switch or a 50/60Hz mod needs to be tested across games, not just booted to a menu.

Choose The Right Scaler

Connecting a used unit to a modern display requires understanding the video output hierarchy. This is not negotiable. RF is worst. Composite is better. S-Video is better still. RGB or component is best. A Super Famicom's native output is 240p through an RGB SCART cable, but a JP-21 cable into a scaler like the RetroTINK-5X Pro or the Open Source Scan Converter requires a JP-21 to SCART adapter. A 240p signal scales to 480p, 960p, or 1200p, not a custom resolution. It applies a destructive deinterlace that discards half the vertical resolution and adds 2-4 frames of lag. It does not suit the gift-giver who wants to hand someone a box and walk away. That buyer will end up with a dead unit and a frustrated friend. It does not suit the CRT-curious collector who has not yet accepted that their apartment has no space for a Sony PVM and that they must learn a scaler's menus.

Use The Meetups As Your Verification Hub

The Hong Kong Retro Game Association's meetups are the single most useful resource here. They are where a buyer can verify hardware claims in person. At a meetup, a seller cannot hide behind a blurred photo or a 'tested working' sticker. The person next to them will point out that their Sega Saturn has a dodgy JP-21 socket or that their Super Famicom's serial number shows it is a PAL unit in an NTSC shell. The association organizes the annual RETRO.HK convention at D2 Place ONE in Lai Chi Kok every December. It is the one weekend a year when Sham Shui Po's entire retro ecosystem moves north. The meetups are the place to find the Hong Kong Retro Game Association's own members selling their spares.
